The way we sit: Spatial arrangements in psychotherapeutic sessions

Vol.5,No.1(2011)

Abstract

The article focuses on spatial arrangements in psychotherapeutic situations. First it distinguishes the four main types of therapy: individual, group, pair, and family. For each of these situations, the author uses visual charts to suggest the basic spatial arrangements between the therapist and the client (or clients). The documentation of the most often encountered situations and the discussion on their advantages and disadvantages is the main aim of the article. The author does not hope to assess which of the proposed arrangements is better or even correct; instead he wishes to communicate, and indeed underline, that not only specific therapeutic schools, but also individual therapists, can vary in their preferred approaches.
