Hyperspace for formative assessment and inquiry-based teaching: Design – development – application

Vol.33,No.2(2023)

Abstract

Inquiry-based learning and formative assessment represent modern trends in education. Should they be used meaningfully and effectively to support pupil learning, teachers need to be provided with opportunities to learn about them, reflect on them and connect them to educational aims and content. This paper describes an online multimedia educational environment (Hyperspace) that introduces inquiry-based education and formative assessment through video sequences and textual/visual representations of teaching and learning, and supports the users in their reflection. Hyperspace is designed for (prospective) teachers and also teacher educators. The paper first mentions the theoretical background of Hyperspace, then its design and development. Individual components of the environment, as well as suggested procedures for working with it are described in detail. The text concludes with a discussion on the challenges of further development of Hyperspace. The paper is intended primarily for teacher educators who wish to use a multimedia environment for supporting (prospective) teachers.
