Future expectations of upper secondary students in different tracks

Vol.31,No.3(2021)

Abstract

Czech secondary education is characterized by high differentiation. Different tracks (academic track, technical track, and vocational track) differ not only in the goals of education and educational content, but also in the composition of students and the school climate. International research shows that the track attended has a great influence on young people‘s ideas about their future lives, and so do their peers and family backgrounds, which differ greatly from one program to another. The aim of this study is to find out how the ideas about the future life of Czech students attending the third year of secondary education differ in different tracks. The analysis used data obtained from 1151 grammar school students, 2216 students attending technical track, and 1504 students attending vocational track in a representative CLoSE survey in 2018. In addition to knowledge and skills of students, ideas about various aspects of their future lives were examined. The research showed different ideas of students of different tracks in terms of their educational aspirations, expected occupation, and expected income. However, students of all tracks had optimistic ideas about their future lives, which differed little between individual tracks.
