Reading Strategies of Primary School Pupils in the Czech Republic

This article focuses on reading with comprehension – an activity of the reader which is seen as an interaction between the author and the recipient. In order to understand a text better, a reader may employ various techniques and strategies. The article consists of three parts. In the first part, categories reading strategy and reading skill and the relationship between them are defined. In the second part, classifications of reading strategies are presented and sorted according to various criteria. The third part summarises the findings of a research project that concentrated on the reading strategies of primary school pupils in Czech primary schools in the 2005/06 school year. The findings indicate primary school teachers’ preferred procedures of using texts in teaching and pupils’ preferred reading strategies by the end of primary education.
