Psychotherapeutic approaches in treatment of borderline personality disorder

Abstract

This article is a summary of various psychotherapeutic treatments of patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), various perspectives of psychoanalytical tradition and also gestalt therapy that represents humanistic approaches. It informs about the most recent approaches constituted in the last 10-20 years and are focused on treatment of BPD - like dialectical-behavior therapy (DBT), cognitive-analytical therapy (CAT), schema-focused therapy (SFT), transference-focused psychotherapy (TFP) and mentalization-based therapy (MBT). It refers to processes of origin and maintenance of the disorder that also shows in a therapeutic alliance. The article can be useful for therapists to get familiar with various psychotherapeutic approaches and theories which aren't well known in the Czech Republic.
