The splendors and miseries of erotic transference and countertransference in clinical practice

Vol.5,No.2(2011)

Abstract

Whether we are talking about the feelings of the patient or the therapist, in both cases, the erotic fantasy is not in itself something that should be a priori avoided or suppressed. Denial of erotic therapist’s images towards the patient is, by contrast, a factor that contributes to the uncontrolled and ineffective therapy. Although the erotic feelings towards the patient attacks on all three pillars of the analytical position, namely neutrality, abstinence and anonymity, the therapist should allow himself to experience erotic desire, provided that they are properly analyzed. Article approaches the historical and current views on the issue of erotic transference and countertransference and discusses options to deal with it.
