Assimilative approach to integration in psychotherapy

Vol.6,No.1(2012)

Abstract

Assimilative integration, the youngest of the four forms of psychotherapy integration, is introduced and defined in comparison to the others forms of integration. Epistemological foundations, upon which assimilation rests, are described: pluralism and contextualism. Furthermore, the basic principles of assimilation are analyzed: consistency with one’s home approach, contextuality of the meaning of psychotherapy concepts and interventions, and the requirement of empirical validity. Discussion about several problematic issues and pros and cons of assimilative integration is offered in the text.
