Abstract

This study focuses on selected cases of continuing belief in witchcraft from the second half of the 19th century. The first section of this study briefly explains the historical context of the witchhunts in early modern Europe and the gradual decline of witchhunting processes. The aim of this study is to introduce the reader to a change in the understanding of the witch’s concept in the European context. In the second section of the study, based on contemporary sources, a brief overview of what happened during a particular case is presented. In the last part, elements of early modern period witchhunts, which could be found in cases from the second half of the 19th century, were analyzed. This study shows different forms of surviving witchcraft beliefs in specific cases.
