In vestigiis medicinae antiquae: an exploratory-based approach to deepening knowledge of Greek and Latin medical terminology
Studii předcházela exkurze skupiny studentů a vyučující latiny v programu všeobecného lékařství Masarykovy univerzity v Brně, která proběhla v autentickém prostředí památek a muzeí současného Říma. Součástí exkurze bylo zapojení studenty připravených aktivit, které vycházely z badatelského přístupu učení a jež cílily na kritické vyhodnocování vybraných postupů v péči o zdraví a léčení v antickém Římě. Pro získání a vyhodnocení informací, účast v diskuzi i vyvození závěrů podložených relevantní argumentací hrála klíčovou roli znalost odborné latinské terminologie i dovednost ji v kontextu relevantních medicínských oborů náležitě použít (anatomie, traumatologie, urgentní medicína, anesteziologie a analgezie apod.).

Kateřina Pořízková, Ph.D., is an assistant professor at the Masaryk University Language Centre. Her research focuses on the lexicography of specialized medical vocabulary, including the compilation of dictionaries and terminology databases, with a special interest in the conceptual differences between medical terminologies and nomenclatures. From a diachronic perspective, she investigates the reception of Greek and Latin medical terms by early modern Czech lexicographers. Drawing on her extensive experience in teaching Latin medical terminology, she seeks to apply corpus linguistics methods to the design of teaching and assessment materials for Latin as a Language for Specific Purposes.
Andrea Pagáčová
Andrea Pagáčová is a second-year medical student at Masaryk University and a member of the scientific group of Tomáš Kazda at Masaryk Memorial Cancer Institute. As part of the clinical research, this scientific group focuses on brain metastases and their treatment, specifically radiation therapy, which has been the gold standard for several years. Since the beginning of the year, she has been involved in the LEGATO (Lomustine with or without reirradiation for first progression of glioblastoma: a randomized phase III study) trial. In addition, she volunteers at the Department of Anatomy, where she assists during teaching sessions.
Marek Schaller
Marek Schaller is a second-year medical student at Masaryk University in Brno and a member of the research group led by Tibor Stračina at the Department of Physiology, where the research focuses on sigma-1 receptors and their role in cardiac remodeling using isolated heart models and the Langendorff perfusion method. In addition to his research activities, he is a participant in the Student as Teacher 7.0 program, where he is training to teach first aid classes to first-year students.
Martin Hanák
Martin Hanák is a General Medicine student at Masaryk University actively involved in biomedical research within the Ondřej Slabý Research Group. His research focuses on unveiling the significance of tumor heterogeneity in the response to targeted therapy in patients with advanced solid tumors using spatial transcriptomics. In addition to his studies and research, Martin is a lecturer in the Medical Biology course at the Department of Biology, Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University, and a Chemistry Club tutor for Bioskop, the scientific educational center at the Faculty of Science, Masaryk University. Furthermore, he is the main organizer of the ViBuCh correspondence seminar for avid high school students, a problem author for the Czech Chemistry Olympiad, and a reviewer for the KSICHT correspondence seminar. Lastly, he is engaged in teaching first aid through PraSe (Practical First Aid Workshop), and will also serve as a student lecturer in first aid classes for General Medicine students.
Jozef Lukačovič
Jozef Lukačovič is a student of general medicine at Masaryk University. He is a member of a research group focused on pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of alpelisib in pediatric patients with vascular malformations. In addition to his studies, Jozef is a member of the author team for Biology Olympiad in Slovakia and Interactive BIology Seminar (IBIS), teaches biology in Bioskop and physics in B-medic courses.
Ondrej Blaško
Ondrej Blasko is a second-year student of General Medicine. As part of his research activities, he works in a group focused on the molecular pathophysiology of diabetic complications. In terms of extracurricular activities, he is involved in volunteering—providing health education and caring for people experiencing homelessness. As a tutor, he leads preparation for elementary school students for their mathematics entrance exams to secondary schools.
Daniel Buday
Daniel Buday is a second-year student of General Medicine at Masaryk University in Brno. He is involved in the research on the development of inflammation after subarachnoid hemorrhage in patients, working within a research group led by Kamil Ďuriš, PhD. Besides his studies, he works as a high school physics lecturer as part of a preparatory course for medical school admissions.
Barbora Bardoňová
Barbora Bardoňová is a second-year General Medicine student at Masaryk University. She is a member of the cancer immunotherapy research group led by Lenka Bešše at the Department of Biology, with her personal research focus being on multiple myeloma. Outside of her studies, she is an active member of IFMSA and has been a dedicated volunteer with the Slovak Red Cross Youth since her second year of grammar school. During her time with the Red Cross, she has participated in numerous projects, primarily focusing on teaching first aid at primary schools, secondary schools, and public venues or providing first aid coverage at various sporting events.
