Professional and Technical Language: Linguistic Challenges in the Context of Traditional Culture
Vol.15,No.1(2025)
Globalisation and the intensification of multicultural contacts offer the opportunity to develop communication skills in foreign languages and to create space for acceptance and tolerance of others. On the other hand, there is a desire to preserve one's own identity, cultural characteristics and history and to present them in their authentic form to potential foreign visitors. Slovakia has a lot to offer in the tourism sector, but in addition to a wide range of services, it is also necessary to have enough professionals in tourism and cultural institutions who are willing and able to communicate in a foreign language. Although English can be seen as a lingua franca, not all foreign visitors are able or willing to communicate in English. It is therefore necessary to strengthen the communication skills of tourism graduates in languages other than English. In our article we focus on teaching the specialist vocabulary in the field of traditional culture in German. There are many specialised materials and textbooks on tourism, but there is a lack of texts and definitions of specialised vocabulary on the content of traditional culture, which is an integral part of our studies. In our article we describe the specific characteristics of technical and professional language. We then present the content of the foreign language in the field of traditional culture and describe the process of compiling and creating a multilingual dictionary of traditional culture, as well as the possibilities for its further use and for working with it in the classroom.
