Basic Swimming Skills In Swimming Education

Abstract

Basic swimming skills make an initial impact for swimming education and their successful adoption affects education positively. This paper tested the level of selected skills in a group of the first semester students of the Department of Physical Education and Sport at University Hradec Králové. The study attempted to discover the level of these skills after swimming education had been concluded 10 years ago. A five-point scale was set up for the skills of: diving head forward, breathing, gliding on breast position, gliding on back position and diving to retrieve two objects. Three groups were tested: Physical Education students (34, TV), Leisure Time Activities students (23, VMV) and Teaching for Primary Schools Education students (70, ZS1). The TV and VMV groups resulted in a very similarly evaluation. The VMV group showed the higher average of achieved points but the TV group were more marked at around the 4 and 5 point-grade. The VMV group were well-balanced. The ZS1 group were significantly behind these groups. It showed big differences in all skills tested and was inclined towards the lowest grades in two skills (breathing, gliding on back position). The high dispersion supposedly resulted from bad cooperation of ZS1 group students. Some of them refused to participate in testing. It is important that basic swimming education is followed with improving swimming education. The more skills the children learn the more often they will participate in swimming and overcome and potential problems. The conclusion was that learned skills will not so easily be lost.
