The passive voice in English and Czech and some implications for teaching

Vol.1,No.2(2008)

Abstract
The paper presents the outcomes of research investigating the passive in English texts in comparison with their Czech translations. The outcomes are then related to English language teaching. The fi ndings show that the periphrastic passive and the active are the most common Czech equivalents for the English passive, depending on the style. The fi ndings imply that the different ways of expression in English and Czech should be taught, especially with respect to word order and different functional styles. The exploitation of past participles closely related to adjectives is suggested as potentially benefi cial for learners.
