Abstrakt
The writer of German origin Charles Sealsfield (1793–1864) was born in the village of Popice in South Moravia as Karl Anton Post. After emigration to the United States, he became famous as the author of the stories from the Wild West. He became a classic of the genre called the Exotic Novel from the New World. European readers appreciated his books, descriptive sketches and novels from the environment of the American Southwest. As one of the first authors he defended the civil rights of the original inhabitants of the American continent together with recognizing the value of their culture. Nevertheless he remained a European. He believed in the superiority of AngloSaxon settlers and their civilizing mission. He warned of the violence against the Indian population and its degradation to secondclass citizens in his works. In the thirties of the nineteenth century he permanently moved to Europe. Thanks to financial stability he could fully concentrate on his literary production. During ten years he published most of his works. Postl also achieved success thanks to the family of the former French emperor. He established close ties to the Bonapartes both in the United States and later on in his last home in Switzerland.
