Abstrakt
History records a number of personages who have struggled with the mainframe history in theirown particular way – either using violence and revolutionary means (e.g. Che Guevara), or nonviolent means of clandestine, slowly progressing revolution (Mahátma Gándhí). The method used by the Czech social pedagogue, pacifist, preacher, and reformer, Přemysl Pitter(1895–1976) may be considered exemplary as a quiet, non-violent way ofeducating man. The story of this personage reflects the most important historical events of the 20th century and his reactions to them. His responses took on the form of actions driven by his desire to understand other people’s needs and his search for steps that man may take or has the moral duty to take in the given historical situation. Přemysl Pitter’s means to public engagement was his love for children who ended up facing extremely hard living situations due to the war. His main ideological instrument was social pedagogy that has links, historically, to the traditions of the Bohemian Brethren: in particular, Jan Milíč of Kroměříž.
