This paper is devoted to the sugar refinery in Židlochovice, which was one of the oldest of its kind in Central Europe. A licence for its establishment was issued to Florent Robert in 1836, and the refinery was put into operation in 1838. During the course of its existence, it was burnt out, was expanded a number of times, was renovated and modernised, and was connected to the railway system. After the First World War, the refinery was confiscated as the property of Archduke Friedrich, and its owner became the Joint Stock Company for the Sugar Refinery Industry in Hodonín. It was nationalised in 1948. The refinery was continually modernised in the interwar period and after the war, its last modernisation coming in 1970. Production ceased definitively in 1991. The refinery (by this time closed and in a desolate structural and technical condition) became the property of the town of Židlochovice within the framework of privatisation.
