Poetics of growing old: Narrative gerontology and its application in psychotherapy of older adults

Abstract

Narrative gerontology is young discipline that studies how older people create stories to understand their lives; what are the main influences on the stories and on process of their creation; what is the „poetics“ of old age. Narrative care is the application of narrative approach in psychotherapy of older people. Reminiscence therapy and life review therapy are the most frequently used structured types of narrative care. Significance of narrative care is related mainly to prevention and treatment of depression in older age.
