Very few books indeed are still cited frequently a century after their author‘s death, when there has been general agreement throughout that period that they are totally wrong. Die Compilation der Digesten Justinians by Franz Hofmann is one of those books. Hofmann was born in 1845. He lectured at the University of Vienna from 1868 onwards, and was Professor of Austrian Private Law from 1877 until his death rn 1897 at the early age of 52.
