Modern Romance studies, which is still strongly influenced by the historical and systematic methods of the historical school, could benefit greatly from research into how the historical school has influenced and continues to influence the field. This type of research occupies an important place on Van den Berghe‘s list of suggested research topics, but very little research of this kind has been carried out to date.
