In accordance with established theoretical frameworks – especially Klein’s typologies of multidisciplinarity, interdisciplinarity, and transdisciplinarity – the conceptual, methodological, and institutional dimensions of cross-disciplinary collaboration are outlined, along with current developments within a broader international context. The research in this field so far indicates the increasing role of interdisciplinarity, which is in line with the changes that our society, technology and education have been undergoing in the recent years. With this in mind, we analysed existing interdisciplinary programmes in the Czech Republic, focusing particularly on those bridging traditionally distant fields such as engineering and natural sciences on the one hand and humanities and social sciences on the other. Our survey revealed that the least frequent combination of disciplines is when natural sciences should merge with humanities. Combining economics and humanities is only slightly less uncommon, and the same can be said about engineering and humanities. On the other hand, it is not so very exceptional to include engineering and the natural sciences which are applied in the given engineering field in a single study programme. This clearly shows that unlike the programmes connecting the “related” fields, combinations of conceptually more distant disciplines are rather rare and present a specific challenge, which may hopefully become less demanding as more information and instances of good practice are identified and shared. The results therefore reflect emerging interdisciplinary efforts even in areas where various constraints remain significant.
Magdalena Šedrlová Petra Zmrzlá Copyright © 2026 Magdalena Šedrlová, Petra Zmrzlá 2026-10-17 2026-10-17 16 1 10.5817/CASALC2026-1-1 Critical-Incident Storytelling as Design-Based Action Research in an HR English Course: A Preliminary Study https://journals.muni.cz/casalc-review/article/view/44682
This article reports a preliminary design-based action research project implemented in a B2-level HR English course for third-year Bachelor students. The study explored how critical-incident storytelling can be used to integrate professionally relevant content, advanced language practice and emotional awareness into ESP course design. The intervention focused on toxic versus professional workplace behaviour and invited students to write anonymised narratives about difficult interpersonal situations experienced either personally or by someone close to them. The final corpus consisted of 11 student narratives, complemented by classroom observation of group discussions based on anonymised critical incidents from previous years. The findings show that students identified recurring forms of toxic behaviour, including misuse of authority, humiliation, manipulation, exclusion, favouritism, work–life boundary violations and weak organisational response. They also connected these behaviours with negative workplace emotions such as fear, distrust, frustration, damaged self-worth and loss of motivation. The task created opportunities for advanced ESP language development through narrative sequencing, reported speech, emotional vocabulary, evaluative language and cause-and-effect structures. At the same time, the intervention revealed limited student awareness of formal grievance procedures and organisational complaint mechanisms. The article argues that critical-incident storytelling can support HR English by linking language development with emotional intelligence and emerging professional judgement.
Ivana Mičínová Copyright © 2026 Ivana Mičínová 2026-10-17 2026-10-17 16 1 10.5817/CASALC2026-1-2 Používanie generatívnej umelej inteligencie vo výučbe odborného anglického jazyka: perspektíva študentov https://journals.muni.cz/casalc-review/article/view/44040
Nástup a rozvoj generatívnej umelej inteligencie (AI) ovplyvnil spôsob fungovania spoločnosti vrátane vzdelávania. Much of the existing research highlights improvements in accuracy and organisation, but the question of how writing changes at the level of discourse remains less explored. This study takes that perspective by combining questionnaire data (n = 354) with an analysis of bachelor thesis introductions (n = 60) produced in an ESP context. The analysis draws on Ken Hyland’s (2010) metadiscourse framework and compares two sets of texts written in 2020–2021 and 2024–2025, reflecting different writing conditions in relation to genAI availability. What emerges is not a uniform improvement, but a more uneven pattern. Students tend to perceive their writing as clearer and easier to produce, and this is visible in the texts through less explicit structural signalling and more frequent clarification and referencing practices. At the same time, features connected to stance and epistemic positioning show little variation. Even where students recognise possible risks such as overreliance or reduced independent thinking, this awareness does not consistently shape how arguments are constructed. This tension is captured through the notion of asymmetrical development, understood as uneven progress across different layers of writing. By placing student perceptions alongside discourse-level evidence, the study offers a more differentiated account of genAI in academic writing and points to the need for more explicit attention to stance, argumentation, and critical engagement in ESP instruction.

Studie popisuje metody tvorby integrovaných jazykových úloh s využitím různých AI nástrojů a zdůrazňuje autenticitu úloh, jejich adaptabilitu a zapojení studentů.
Eva Ellederová Copyright © 2026 Eva Ellederová 2026-10-17 2026-10-17 16 1 10.5817/CASALC2026-1-5 Harnessing AI for Inclusive Education https://journals.muni.cz/casalc-review/article/view/44265
The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into higher education presents transformative opportunities for enhancing learning experiences, particularly for neurodivergent students. This paper explores AI-driven strategies and tools designed to support university students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) by fostering structured learning, effective communication, and adaptive teaching approaches. Key strategies include maintaining predictable course structures, employing multimodal teaching methods, and offering individualized support to accommodate diverse learning needs. AI applications such as lecture transcription, text-to-speech conversion, and adaptive learning platforms provide personalized learning experiences. Additionally, assistive technologies play an increasingly vital role in inclusive higher education. Recent studies highlight how AI-driven assistive tools enhance accessibility and academic performance for students with learning difficulties. Furthermore, AI-enhanced assistive technologies are evolving to address the unique challenges of neurodivergent learners, offering solutions to improve focus, comprehension, and social communication in higher education settings. Beyond academic support, AI-powered virtual assistants, chatbots, and social interaction tools help students navigate both academic and social challenges. Educators play a critical role in fostering a neurodivergent-friendly environment through peer mentoring, flexible assessment methods, and conflict resolution strategies. This paper discusses best practices, implementation challenges, and the evolving role of AI in neurodiverse education, ultimately highlighting how AI can bridge gaps in learning and social engagement for students with ASD in a business school in the Czech Republic.
Ioana Kocurova-Giurgiu Miluše Löffelmannová Zuzana Havlisová Copyright © 2026 Ioana Kocurova-Giurgiu, Miluše Löffelmannová, Zuzana Havlisová 2026-10-17 2026-10-17 16 1 10.5817/CASALC2026-1-6 In vestigiis medicinae antiquae: an exploratory-based approach to deepening knowledge of Greek and Latin medical terminology https://journals.muni.cz/casalc-review/article/view/44107
Studii předcházela exkurze skupiny studentů a vyučující latiny v programu všeobecného lékařství Masarykovy univerzity v Brně, která proběhla v autentickém prostředí památek a muzeí současného Říma. Since all three constructions can present information as non‑negotiable by embedding it in the that-clause, it is hypothesized that their highest frequencies will occur in the humanities, where persuasive discourse plays a comparatively prominent role, while more empirical disciplines may employ them with a lower frequency.

The findings support this expectation for it-clefts, which occur most frequently in the humanities and are especially common in the least empirical humanities disciplines (literary studies, philosophy, and art and music). Non‑specificational copular clauses show a similar cross‑domain distribution; yet no clear variation pattern within the humanities is observed. In contrast, passive constructions with extraposed subjects in the form of a that-clause exhibit the opposite pattern, with the highest frequency in the natural sciences. The results of the analysis confirm the hypothesis that constructions with extraposed subject that-clauses are suitable for persuasive discourse; however, it is also shown that despite formal similarities, the passive construction is used to avoid the usage of personal pronouns and animate subjects in general rather than backgrounding a piece of information by means of placing it in the that-clause.
Kryštof Beták Copyright © 2026 Kryštof Beták 2026-10-17 2026-10-17 16 1 10.5817/CASALC2026-1-8 Editorial https://journals.muni.cz/casalc-review/article/view/45633 Ludmila Koláčková Lenka Zouhar Ludvíková Copyright © 2026 Ludmila Koláčková 2026-10-26 2026-10-26 16 1 Recenzia Kurucová, Z.; Demovičová, A. Systém je koncipován jako nástroj formativního hodnocení, který kombinuje podrobný hodnoticí checklist, rámec zpětné vazby Glow and Grow a následný dotazník zaměřený na zjišťování vnímání procesu vrstevnické zpětné vazby ze strany studentů. Projekt byl implementován v seminářích reflektivního psaní, kde studenti hodnotili eseje svých spolužáků pomocí checklistu založeného na klíčových fázích reflexe (Co? Proč je to důležité? Co dál?). Prvek Glow and Grow podporoval vyváženou a konkrétní zpětnou vazbu tím, že studenty vedl k identifikaci silných stránek i oblastí ke zlepšení. Po ukončení hodnocení studenti vyplnili anonymní dotazník, v němž hodnotili přínosy a obtíže celého procesu. Získané výsledky naznačují, že strukturovaná vrstevnická zpětná vazba podporuje hlubší zapojení studentů do konvencí reflektivního psaní a rozvíjí jejich povědomí o efektivním psaní a dovednosti sebehodnocení, čímž přispívá k rozvoji autonomie studenta v jazykovém vzdělávání.
Tetiana Kibalnikova Marie Lahodová Vališová Copyright © 2026 Tetiana Kibalnikova, Marie Lahodová Vališová 2026-10-17 2026-10-17 16 1 10.5817/CASALC2026-1-9 Gradual writing technique: Enhancing task-based ESP course https://journals.muni.cz/casalc-review/article/view/43900
The emergence of advanced AI tools launched a new education era of “beautiful” AI-generated texts and effortless writing assignments. The trend of using AI tools for generating school assignments has undermined the value of student writing also in ESP lessons, although writing has been considered, together with speaking, a productive skill whose improvement ESL manuals require as an indicator of language skill development and assessment as defined by CEFR descriptors. In order to keep writing a tool of thinking and expressing human ideas while learning the technical terminology in ESP course, the traditional 1-page written home assignments were replaced by a series of short, 50-200 words long paragraphs that students developed directly during the ESP lessons. All these “micro-assignments” targeted architectural projects that the students were developing during the same semester, thus the outcome writing was a form of diary of student thinking process and served as preparation material for their final written assignment that was graded. As a result of this writing experiment, much lower number of students reported using AI tools for generating the short and topic-focused writings. This paper reports on employing this emergency /experimental writing technique in the course of technical English for architects FA BUT and summarizes the main factors leading to student centered writing component in ESP lessons.
Jolana Tluková Copyright © 2026 Jolana Tluková 2026-10-17 2026-10-17 16 1 10.5817/CASALC2026-1-10 Distinguishing Factual and Conceptual Knowledge in Academic English Teaching: Implications for Learning and Self-Study https://journals.muni.cz/casalc-review/article/view/43792
In higher education language teaching, students work with qualitatively different types of knowledge that place distinct demands on learning, yet these differences are rarely made explicit in instruction. As a result, learners often apply uniform learning strategies across knowledge types, leading to ineffective processing of content – for example, attempting to memorise what requires understanding or overanalysing forms that need to be readily recalled. This misalignment between knowledge type and learning strategy can limit both learning efficiency and the development of usable language skills, particularly in Academic English and English for Specific Purposes (ESP) contexts, where learners must integrate accurate linguistic retrieval with conceptually informed communication. This paper presents a classroom-informed pedagogical approach that explicitly distinguishes between factual and conceptual knowledge and examines its implications for classroom learning and student self-study. It is based on the premise that factual knowledge benefits from accurate recall and retrieval, while conceptual knowledge requires understanding relationships and context-sensitive use. Making this distinction visible in instruction supports more appropriate engagement with content. The article demonstrates how this distinction can be operationalised through targeted task design, differentiated instructional techniques, and explicit modelling of learning strategies. It provides concrete examples of how teachers can guide students in recognising what needs to be remembered, what needs to be understood, and how to approach each effectively in independent study. The paper outlines practical implications for teaching, particularly in relation to task design, instructional clarity, and the development of more effective learning habits. By aligning teaching approaches with the nature of the knowledge being learned, this approach supports the development of usable language skills and contributes to greater learner autonomy.
Ivana Juríková Copyright © 2026 Ivana Juríková 2026-10-17 2026-10-17 16 1 10.5817/CASALC2026-1-11 Lessons Learned: How to Write an ESP Book – English for Crisis Management https://journals.muni.cz/casalc-review/article/view/44086
Abstract

Developing a professional English coursebook for Crisis Management students represents both a linguistic and pedagogical challenge.
